Universal and AMC Reach Deal, Ending Theater Chain's Ban on Studio's Movies

In a significant move that marks a shift from their recent animosity, Universal Pictures has reached an agreement with movie theater chain AMC Theatres. Under the terms of this deal, Universal will lift its ban on having its movies play exclusively at AMC-owned theaters.

The decision comes as part of broader efforts by major studios to reassess traditional theatrical exclusivity agreements in light of changing viewing habits and consumer preferences towards streaming services like Netflix and Disney+.

Universal initially imposed a nationwide no-sell agreement on 46 high-profile titles after the two companies failed to reach an acceptable distribution deal. This move was seen as a direct response to AMC's request for greater flexibility in how Universal's movies could be released, particularly with regards to its new ad-supported streaming service called Peacock.

The deal reportedly includes provisions that grant AMC more control over when and where certain Universal titles are made available on the company’s various platforms. Additionally, it appears to pave the way for future cooperation between both parties across multiple aspects of film distribution and exhibition.

As part of this agreement, Universal will also provide a significant upfront payment to AMC as well as an estimated $1 billion in rebates over several years. This move by Universal follows similar agreements reached recently with other major studio counterparts such as Warner Bros., which struck a deal allowing its movies to premiere simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters nationwide starting last year.
